My name is Elissa Marzzarella, I'm 17-years old, and I am a senior at Shippensburg Area Senior High School. This blog is for my AP Studio Art class, where I will be blogging about my projects, my process, and inspirations So, no further ado, a few inspirational artists: JOHN LURIE . . . http://johnlurieart.com/ I have followed this man on Twitter for at least a year now, and he has such an amazing style. His works are abstract, crude, and even deep at times. Some of my favorite works aren't entirely school appropriate; Lurie loves to add expletives into his work. I love his lack of care in this specific aspect; it shows his self-respect to do what he wants. Below are three pieces, each with their name and media. Lurie tends to work with watercolor, using wet paper and salt for texture and interest. He also frequently uses small blocks of color around his art. He also uses oils, where he appears to do layers. These works are all cool-toned, which I enjoy. I love how his works are abstract and yet very detailed. The works look very juvenile, and yet have an air of class about them. The use of texture is ever-present in his works, which is shown below. They are truly beautiful pieces, each with a title that makes you pause. COLIN CHILLAG . . . http://www.colin-chillag.com/ Chillag is an Arizona-based artist, who does both hyper-realism, and cartoony abstractism. I tend to like his "unfinished"-looking hyper-realistic oil paintings, which I am sure takes so much time. His more abstract pieces, not shown, are odd pieces, certainly. Below are two pieces of his, where I can't seem to find a name, or maybe they just don't have any. I believe he works with oils, and does contour drawings first, filling in the main focus of the painting and leaving the rest blank. I picked the following images because of how amazingly he manages to create such lifelike images that look like photographs. The lack of painting on the perimeter of the painting is fascinating. I picked the traffic image because despite it looking like a busy image, he manages to make it look simple with the contour lines. The woman in the bikini is beautifully rendered, and the shade and lighting that Chillag was able to capture is impeccable.
