artist statement
Art was not always a passion of mine. I say this because before high school the art I did felt automatic - something I did because it soothed me and came natural to me. Sketching on computer paper would lead me to be scolded by my father for wasting supplies, and would finally lead him to let me buy a sketchbook.
Once I got into high school, the art became more than something that I just did, it became a need. I hungered for different methods and techniques. I began to respect all forms of art: the hyper realism, the expressionism, the abstract, the nonobjective, and even anti-art. All of these forms take risks, challenge both the artist and viewer, and create emotions. It is both a dream and wish for me to create art that develops these characteristics.
I typically work with portraiture. I like to create a realistic approach to the majority of my portrait, and then go back and develop line quality, texture, and a form of autonomic behavior to either the background or an aspect of the subject. This develops a sense of accuracy, as well as artistic license.
I am inspired by two jack-of-all-trades artists: Leonardo da Vinci and Milton Glaser. These men - one ancient, one contemporary- are what I aspire to be as an artist. Da Vinci is a man who had all aspects of ability: art and sciences. Being a girl who has a passion for the sciences (and an interest to major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) as well as art, I relate to da Vinci's awe-inspiring research and classic pieces. Glaser is a man who has incredible, multifaceted ability, with a large selection of quality works, and an even larger collection of breadth. I love both the practical and finer arts and these two men are the perfect combination of what I aspire to be.
